The group I paddle and race with has two CLC triples. One was modified to make it narrower by 3.5 inches (IMO a much better boat). They paddle just as well as a double when paddled by two but you have an option for three that you don't get with a double. The open hole just gets a cockpit cover.

I really like how easy it is to load gear in that big opening and then just put on the cover. You can carry a full size grill or cooler if you want to. :-)
