Not sure if this applies to you, but most varnishes recommend that you don't stir them before use. This of course goes against the instructions in every other type of paint-like stuff.

Appearenty, there are no solids to settle out, and the stirring introduced bubble which won't easily come out. I was careful to avoid shaking the can, didn't stir it, tipped only what I needed into a placic cup, and brushed slowly as few times as possible to achieve coverage (with Goldspar), and tipped off the occasional bubble with a dry brush. .
