Yes, I was referring to the deck glass.

Good advice from Chuck on using the plane, but you also have to keep in mind the grain direction. If you try to plane against the grain, it'll behave exactly the same way as if the blade was out too far. Definitely practice if you haven't done this before. A 6-foot long piece of poplar 1x4 conveniently clamped will give you a good approximation of the width and feel of planing the clamps.

As far as sharpening goes, if the plane starts out sharp, it won't need sharpening for just one set of clamps, so that's one complication you can ignore for now.
