You guessed it, upside down through the hole. It helps to mask the perimeter of the area to be glassed. Trim the glass at the tape and remove the tape after an overnight set on the epoxy.

Another trick is with the kayak right side up lay the cloth over the top of the recess. Stick maksing tape on the the cloth just inside the slightly undersized cockpit cutout around its perimeter. Then cut the hole out of the glass by cutting the masking tape in half along its length. This It creates a hole in the cloth that does not fray with handling and epoxying. Flip the kayak and hang it up-side-down in two slings and epoxy the glass to the inside of the deck.
