I think 4 is the minimum over epoxy with varnish. More is better. The goal is to get enough varnish on there that you can lightly sand and recoat every so often (depending on use/abuse) before it goes to heck. Preventative recoating instead of refinishing.

For Brightsides you do enough coats to cover uniformly. Probably 3 minimun since the paint is so thin to begin with. The paint is plenty glossy by itself. Brightsides is about the most glossy paint around except the 2 part linear polys like Interthane and Awlgrip. No need to do a darn thing to it when you are done.
