FYI - the cost is in the materials, not the labor. Once you pony up for the carbon fiber & epoxy, it's actually easier to make a CF paddle than a wooden one, yea even a red cedar GP. So those craftsmens' kids aren't going to Ivy League schools (at least not from dad's share of the cost of a paddle).
Now if you're looking for a labor-intensive high-cost boat part, try sails. I mean, $400 for 60 square feet of 4 oz dacron which has a material cost of about $50. Most of the price there is for the sailmaker's skilled labor (I hope).
Anybody got plans for sealskin sails?
