Glue the two halves together with a short piece of tongue depressor or whatever when they are flat on your worktable. (Well, maybe not in the dining room.) This biscuit prevents the joint from opening up when you stack the spacers on the deck; similar to placing a glass strip over the joint, except you might use wood glue or CA to save time. Only about a half inch of the middle ply need be removed from each half of the joint.

The complete riser stack is assembled on a plastic covered deck in one clamping session. Once the epoxy cures the stack effect of the outside edge can be shaped without the rim/deck interference. Not to mention adding fill coats while the access is easier.

You should be able to see the lighter colored �biscuits� in the picture.
