How about this method suggested for touching up car finishes: Apply the finish (not thinned) to the scratch/chip. Let dry and reapply until the defect is filled. Use very fine wet/dry sandpaper and water (I use a small squeeze bottle), carefully sand the repair flush. Polish and you will have an invisible repair.
I do not know how you applied the finish to your boat, but several years ago I started wet sanding all my gloss finishes (furniture and boats)with progressively finer sandpaper and then finishing up with automotive rubbing compounds and wax.
