I've built 2 strippe kayaks, and the longest boards I use are 8 feet, I use a scarf joint to join the pieces. If you keep track on the strips, you can select 2 side by side strips and join the ends that match up for a nearly invisible joint. Joints that show are not bad either, most people just ignore the fact that there is a bit of color difference in the join. Here's a picture of 2 joints a bit too close together and before final fairing and sanding. More pictures at the link, and you can click on 'all sizes' to zero in on the grain of the wood. Tony Olsen
