I used the VCP hatch on my wife's 17lt right behind the cockpit and it works perfectly well. The flange bends easily to the radius of the deck and the hatch cover is still water tight. No need to build an epoxy dam around it. Some guys put the base in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it up a bit but that's not necessary. I used 8 screws to hold it down and used the drill/fill/drill method before installing the hatch.
