Re: Chesapeake 16 bulkhea

I moved the bulkheads in the one one I built for my wife. The boat looks fine and she's used it for a year now with no problems.

This is a pretty common occurrence, judging by the number of times I've seen this question on this message board. I think it is caused by the fact that the hull panels are wired together before the bulkheads are put in. Other boats I've built had the bulkheads attached to the panels first, then the hull panel edges are wired together. With those I've never had any fit problems.

I think that if you're willing to play around long enough with the wire ties, you should be able to adjust the panels to where the bulkheads fit according to the plans. Or you could take it all apart and attach the bulkheads first. Or just move the bulkheads to where they fit. Or shim it up the way Obee did his. That's the beauty of this style of construction - it's vey flexible and hard to screw up.

But I'd keep any gaps to 1/4 inch or less, if it was me (personally I prefer 1/8).

Good luck,

Laszlo
