I just sized mine ever so slightly oversized so there was some compression on the ends, only enough to have it stay in place on its own when dry. Then i glued it into place without any screws, brads, clamps, etc. If you do this, make sure that you have generous fillets on the fore and aft faces where the end come up against the shear clamp. Glass tape a la Kyle would make it totally bulletproof, but even without it's plenty strong. Just be sure that it cures *completely* before putting stress on it (like maybe 2 to 3 days at 70+ degrees).
