Mark's skeg kit uses a slider/cable scheme. All that's visible on deck is a recessed button of sorts. The parts are finished with graphite powder.

A lot of careful assembly involved but you get what you pay for.

The bungie deployment and open trunk in CLC's skeg kit is definitely KISS principle. Not much to go wrong, and if it does it's all out there in plain view where you can fix it in the field. Hidden cables and closed trunks will eventually be cause for heartburn (the cables corrode in their housing, for example) but I think Mark's is the best of them by far and away.
