The lesson is that stiffness and ultimate strength are not the same. More of one is often less of the other. You can take a very strong boat, add a strip of Kevlar, and turn it into a weaker boat.

A friend of mine was a stress analyst for plastic assemblies. Often he had to explain to mechanical engineers that the solution to the problem of a plastic cover latch that was frequently breaking in the field was to make it thinner, not thicker.
