From the standpoint of building light, don't forget that a faceted deck MUST be fiberglassed on both sides, which adds back most or all of the weight you saved by eliminating sheerclamps or deckbeams. The standard Shearwater 17 doesn't have sheerclamps or a deckbeam but weighs the same as a Chesapeake 17LT.
