Roger,
You mentioned Thule racks for hauling your craft as if they weren't sufficient on a Honda CRV. I drive a Nissan Frontier king cab and only have 33" between the bars. I haul two yaks (Redfish King 17'9", CLC Ch. 18) side by side up there. Two rachet fastened straps across the yaks, one at each bar, and a bow and stern line to the vehicle make it nice and secure even with turbulence of passing trucks. Several hundred miles with mine and no problems. Racks padded with closed cell foam sleeves.
