yep, rounding off one edge of the stiffeners is a good idea. It takes just a few swipes of a plane or sanding block. And DEFINATELY sand the underside where the strips are glued on. I saw three old Chesapeakes (before the full hatch hole reinforcement) that only had the two fore/aft stiffeners. On the aft hatch I could pop the forward stiffener right off by reaching in underneath and pulling an edge while striking the deck with my fist. The strip went onto an unsanded cured underside with only c-clamps at the hatch hole. The strip wasn't touching the deck beyond the hatch. It was odd even though the underside had a raspy unsanded finish the bond was marginal.
