yes they go sheer clamp to sheer clamp but you are correct that regular small 2" c-clamps are not sufficient to clamp the portion between the hatch and the sheer. Of the kayaks I've seen where c-clamps were only used at the hatch on the underside the strip would be glued near the shear and at the hatch but kind of floating free a bit in between. Deep 3" long c-clamps or similar clamps help.
