I think your advise about 'not making it worse' is something I need to keep in mind. There are some areas of the deck i will need to sand down to bare wood because of cracks in the fininsh. But i think i will take the minimilist approach, and take of as little as needed.

Can you give more details about the hatch lips? Mine lacks the lip also and is not very water tight, I have some idea of what to do, but would like to hear your solution. I do have the underside reinforcments though.

Here is a pic of the boat before any work. I'll update progress.
