brett,

another approach if you want the pieces to mate on the inside and not have the stair step on the outside is to build the coaming on the boat without attaching it to the boat. lifting it off and shaving off the stairsteps....then attaching it to the deck.

this is the approach that i have taken. build the coaming per the instructions on the boat but with a piece of plastic (i used a cut up garbage bag) over the deck. when everything has hardened, you lift the coaming off and use a rasp and sandpaper to take off all the bumps and smooth on the outside of the coaming. then remove the plastic and glue onto the hull.

works great and makes the inside look very neat with no spaces between the halves and the outside looks very nice with no steps.
