To Scarf or To Butt?

Almost ready but still pondering the scarf joint versus the glass taped butt joint called for in my plans. The joint is to be in the dead middle of all 8 planks of an 11.5' canoe, which is best for strength and/or should I brace butt joint with scrap ply, building with 4mm? The plans also only call for the joints between planks to be taped, inside and out, I plan to tape inside after fillets are layed and cover inside and out with glass if that makes this question to be answered any differently. Thanks for all help so far.
