However fun it is, I do not think its absolutely necessary. I have been using the wet sand every other coat method. I use a 3M pad for the other coats. Find a fine grade pad. Some brands come in grits so shoot for 320 or 400 grit. The pad is used dry and with minimal pressure. Some guys also do hot coating - that is putting on the next coat as soon as the varnish is tack free and set hard. Something less than 24 hours. I do this on trim but not on large areas like a yak.
BTW, I do like wet sanding as much as Doug.
