Re: Butt or scarf?

A canoe is a wide hull with the opportunity to present a lot of stress where the hull bottom turns up. If the designer designates that the butt joints line up with tape on both sides I assume that more glass is going over all of it. Is there a possibility that this feature is a hull stiffening element? Look at Wenonahs ultralight foam core canoes that have ribs up the sides. It's possible the lined up butt joints with extra glass comprise a stiffening element. Just guessing here.

There are a few commercial designs out there that push materials to the edge of acceptable durability that the customer discovers in the margins of use.

Venturing from a design can sometimes have unintended consequences. There's a possibility you are making an experiment.
