I use an 25mm long scarf for 4mm plywood, just looks right to my eye. And if you go this way, you must add 25mm to one (not both) of the mating panels in order to end up at the correct overall length.

Which is better, and where the joint occurs, depends on what you wish to accomplish. If you're looking at structural integrity, I'd tend to think it's a non-issue -- having never looked over your plans.

Butt joints are easier for some folks, but I have no difficulty planing scarfs and find them simpler.
