Daggerboard/skeg

Posted by FrankP on Sep 30, 2005

So I was out paddling yesterday for the first time with other people. I'm not finished with my NorthBay but it gets me there, wherever there is.

One of the big issues I had was not having my skeg, I was basically tacking my way back and forth on the river (for 8 miles) which got a bit annoying after a while.

So here's the question. I put my skeg box in backwards, which isn't really a big deal to fix, but is awkward. But talking with a few folks last night it occured to me that I could build a dagger board style skeg and not require any deck rigging for it...just drop it in and let it ride. I was thinking of making it a nice sweep so any rocks would basically just push the board upward and then let gravity pull it back down. The only big issue I can see is during rolling.

Can anyone see any other reasons not to do that?
