John,

You obviously have experience or live near the Alleghany. I was born and raised in Pa next to the Mongahela. Remember breaking ice one more than one winter season. Thought it was fun then, now I think it is something akin to suicidal! Funny how things change as I get older. I now prefer the more placid Atlantic where getting past the breakers is a major fete. I love how the common love of yakin' brings us out of our homes to explore nature and our own senses no matter where we live.
