I agree with Mac. You really only need it on the bow and stern where you are more likely to impact or scrape bottom. I go back about 18" only. I would find the 3" tape too thick and stiff to apply neatly in this location. Instead, I use a strip (or two) of 8oz cloth cut on the bias so that it forms easily around the curve of the bow and stern. It also has a thin edge that is easier to feather in to the hull. Apply it after the hull glass is wetted out and has hardened, but is still "green". Then work in your fill coats to the whole hull.
