Nails & deck attachment

I'm getting ready to install the deck on my 17LT and am looking for some advice in regards to drilling pilot holes for the ring nails. It doesn't mention it in the construction guide, but with the size of the nails, I have visions of splitting plywood if they are nailed in without pilot holes.
