hot glue

Some posters on this forum have used hot melt glue to hold pieces in place temporarily. I tried that on a hatch cover brace. Not only did it not hold but it has left a residue behind. I messed up the brace trying to scrape it off. Any recommendations as to a solvent to remove the left behind residue? RogerJ
