Hi Mike, you can do either. The method Howard discusses works well.

I did the opposite. I painted the hull first. I masked off the overlap into the deck using 3m fineline tape and did 5 coats. Then let that cure for a week masked the paint using 3m blue tape. It's actually really easy to match the lines up.

I have tried Interlux Brightsides and someother marine brand paint (I forget the name but I liked the colors better so I bought it). The Interlux covered better and cured hard in a matter of days. The other paint was still soft.

You can also get Interlux at your local boat store. It runs between 20-25 bucks a quart.
