Low shears, sorta

Posted by Mike D on Aug 1, 2005

I have finally gotten around to planing the shears on the WR18 that is ever so slowly taking shape in the shop.

So far it is real impressive how the radius guides exactly contact the tops of bulkheads #1, #3, and #4 when the shear strips are planed down to the top inside edges of the shear panels. Looks like everything is as it should be - but...

Not so with bulkhead #2. I know what I did wrong and how I am going to try to fix it.

When I glued the shear strips to the panels I left them proud per the instructions. Seems that they are still a bit low from about 18 inches forward of bulkhead #2 to past the deckbeam location. If I were to keep planing till the top inside edges cleaned up I would have to trim the bulkhead by 5/16". So instead of lowering the top of the bulkhead I am planning on gluing a strip of fir (what I have on hand, don't have enough cypress) on top of the low areas in order to have full contact with the underside of the deck.

One more thing to do better on the next boat.

Happy building, MD
