No pretty butts here

Mill Creek 16.5, four butt joints not looking good eventhough I cut it with a sharp knife and many passes. It looked fine before gluing.

Want to finish deck with epoxy and varnish.

The butt plate's cab-0-sil thickened glue has passed up through the joints and not totally filling them. Not a big mess due to plastic covered clamping, but it doesn't look nice. I'll have to finish filling the joints but it will look whitish due to the glue.

Any suggestions? Magic tricks?
