On page 3 of the Chesapeake 18 plans, the hatches are shown full-sized, with the frame locations marked as dotted lines.

On the hatch color, it could be that the wood is just simply a little darker. We try hard to match the hatch color with the deck color, but even within individual sheets there's a good bit of variation.

The 1/2-inch rubber gasket material will more than soak up any gaps between hatch and deck.
