That would work. Leaving the mast step alone will create more mast rake, which is not the end of the world. You can simply move the halyard attachment point further aft on the yard and the sail will maintain the same Center of Effort.

Ours does, too, in the shop, but on the water it jams to one side and doesn't move around.

I hate, HATE jammed daggerboards or masts.
