Begging to differ, I believe that toning down the gloss of the decks a bit does make the sun glare less bothersome. Or maybe my eyes are more photosensitive than most. It has the added benefit of making the scratches and other imperfections a bit less noticeable.

I varnish with gloss, then polish the boat with a mildly abrasive boat polish, which seems to reduce the gloss enough. It also leaves your britework very smooth and pleasing to fondle.
