Re: Additional Coats

Brightsides needs a mechanical bond to adhere properly to previous coats. Since it is a solvent based product it needs to be sanded between coats. My formula for brightsides is to thin it out with the maximum amount of the appropriate thinner and adding 2-3 oz of penetrol per quart. The thinner helps the paint to dry thoroughly. This will make your wet sanding easier, thus you get a better finish. A thicker paint will develop a "skin" over it, trapping uncured paint and solvents underneath. The grit you sand with depends on color. For dark colors, like my boat, 400 grit is a must to eliminate sanding scratches. With lighter colors you could use 320 grit. Good luck with the painting. If you are obsessive/compulsive like me, ask someone elses opinion of your work. Otherwise your wife will ask you,"Are you painting that boat agian? What was wrong with it the last time?"
