Drives me nuts, too.

I've taken to adding a powerful, portable work light to the mix - shining it along the hull or sides or deck towards me. It seems to show the dry spots and holidays better than fixed overhead lighting. 'Course the real test is when I open the garage door and the sunlight hits it - shriek!

Oh, and I'm half blind now. Helps, 'cause I can't see the bad paint jobs any more. (Just kidding..)
