Varnish vs paint

Ok, I can see the end and my kid wants me to keep the bottom varnished and I would like a blue hull with varnish topside. Before I kick myself for doing it, how hard is it to paint over the varnish if I don't like it? Is paint more durable or easier to refinish after running up on shore hundreds of times?
