The price to build a kayak has many determining factors. I'm sure there would a few of people here who could build a wooden kayak for less than $300. However they have an established workshop, tools and left-over materials from previous projects.

If you were starting with limited resources, perhaps skin on frame kayak maybe cheaper. Tom Yost has a wide selection of designs and an excellent online manual on his website. All the designs are availabe free for personal use. You don't need to make them folding, either, if you don't want the extra work or expense. They are also quite light.

Perhaps the Yarra LC could be what your looking for.

PS I'm still to see a wooden boat that looked home-made, only hand-crafted.
