The cracking might have been the plywood checking maybe. Paint won't stop that. Primer does save some paint coats if the color paint you are using is not a good one for hiding (think yellow, red or dark green). Otherwise I am not sure it really matters. Some guys like a primer so they know if the scratch goes to the wood or not. A white scratch means you are into the primer, a dark scratch means you are into the wood. Stay away from the high build primers - they contain talc which attracts moisture - and that is not a good thing under boat paint.

There is no such thing as a one part poly paint. The "one part polys" are really just alkyd enamels with some poly added. Buy good quality paint like Interlux Brightsides or Petit Easy Poxy or Kirby or oil based porch and floor paint. All will do a good job on your yak.
