MC 16.5 Rounded Coaming

Posted by Archie M. Sullivan on Jun 1, 2005

I thought that I would pass along some pictures of the rounded coaming on my Mill Creek 16.5.

Rather than the one layer of 6mm okoume called for in the plans, the coaming is made up of two layers of 4mm. The tight radius is achieved by cutting a series of small dadoes/notches through two of the three plywood layers with my router. When installed the dadoes on each of the layers face each other so they only show on the edge of the finished coaming. After cutting the notches the wood was softened with boiling water and clamped into place to dry. Once dry they retained their shape. The notches were filled with cabosil thickened epoxy when the two layers were joined together.

The construction photos are scans of disposable camera prints so they are not that great.
