The new 4-stroke gas outboards are remarkably light and efficient. A 2hp will drive the Jimmy Skiff with power to spare. A bigger engine than that and the Jimmy Skiff will just squat by the stern, and try to throw you out of the boat if you turn to sharply.

The electric motors work fine, especially if you arrange to put the batteries up forward where they balance the crew weight the best.
