We have a 16.5 that we cartop on occassion. we run the front strap fore of the combing, at an angle, so the strap lays against the reinforced combing point. Aft, the straps just go over the combing near the back of the cockpit. No probelm yet.

That combing with the rim glued on the way the plans say is plenty strong.

Or maybe I'm just lucky so far.
