...wow! I would add the tapes. You need the strength on the joints, inside and out. Make sure you have removed all loose material so that you have a good strong bond. I prolly would have used a dremmel with a low-grit grinding wheel. Still, if you used the right-angle grinder and the wood is still there, all the power to ya.
