I too use a home made greenland paddle for all of the above reasons. I took to it right away, and loved it except I was getting wetter than with a euro paddle. Then I figured out that I was still paddling euro style, ie too deep. With a shallower, faster stroke, the water stays away. I don't surf, just paddle and fish and the greenland is great for those. One word of caution, watch the kind of wood you use. I bought cedar and somehow got 3 white boards and one red at the lumberyard. They were mixed in together. I have two of the same length and the red is quite a bit heavier. I assume pine would be even more so. gwalter
