Thank you, Kurt. This is exactly the sort of answer I was looking for. Your experiences with the paddle give me some insight into what I can expect when I give it a try.

I figure for my first one I'll try to build from a blank of dimensional pine. Yeah it'll probably be a little heavy at first but I'm cheap. I also have a local lumber yard that produce truly high quality clear, virtually knot free dimensional lumber for the same price that the "Orange and White" store charges for stud grade. If I screw up the first one, it won't hurt my wallet, I'll just get another blank. Cedar around here runs about 2-3 times the price (once I figure out the carving technique, I'll go there).
