wood stains

My girlfriend and I are about to begin construction of our kits (a 16LT and an arctic hawk) and I was wondering about the feasibility of using stains rather than paint for color. I realize that at the very least this will increase the amount of planning and prep work before glassing, but is it even possible, let alone worthwhile, to achieve a nicely stained finish that will stand up to the rigors of the glassing process? I am especially concerned about the hawk, since it calls for a two-stage application of glass to the hull. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, -jamie
