I think it's a bad idea to make a front hatch too small to fit the most common long/slender dry bags that you'd use to pack it with. Not sure about using the same size aft hatch though. You could make an elliptical hatch easily. An ellipse is the most convenient shape for pushing a tubular shaped bag through a deck. That's why VCP hatches are shaped that way. It also has the least gasket area compared to a rectangular hatch for a given length/width,,if that means anything.
