If I can envision your idea correctly, this would essentially mean a nylon covering replacing the stiff wood and gasket of the more traditional lid?
If you were only ever paddling flat water without any breaking waves it would probably be OK. Do you think it could withstand the pressures of an Eskimo roll?
The thing about the usual hatch covers is that while they may leak a little, they're pretty certain to prevent total and sudden flooding of the hatches. It this ever happens during a capsise, you'll loose your kayak to Davey Jones.
You would never be excluded from paddling with us CLCers - heck we wouldn't let you paddle alone!
