Flush Hatch Kit vs stock

I am building a wr 18.

I really like the looks of hatch covers made with the Flush Hatch Kit. They look great but I am concerned that they may not be as water tight as the stock hatches.

Are they are as water proof as the stock hatch covers ? The stock covers have a lip on the deck that water would have to go over. Where it appears as though any water that goes in the cracks of the flush opening will eventuall work its way into the hatch.

I do a lot of paddling in Lake Erie. It is shallow so waves break over my deck quite a bit.
